Smooth, Synopsis
Return to Screenplays.
Nick & Andy are two small-time crooks who prowl the city late at night. With plenty of time to chat between heists, the pair get on the topic of ex-girlfriends one evening. Nick tells Andy of a young college student named Samantha whom he was formerly dating and is now attempting to get back with.
When Andy eventually makes her acquaintance he is immediately smitten, and gradually begins to court her behind the back of his dangerous associate. But Sam has a secret. She has a condition known as alopecia which causes her to lose all the hair on her body. She is able to conceal it temporarily by taking a hormone replacement drug, but the treatment is not a cure, and its potency & effectiveness in combating the disorder gradually begins to wear off. Having had her share of failed relationships, Sam realizes she may have finally found her one true love in Andy. But as her condition becomes harder and harder to disguise, she knows it is only a matter of time before he will find out, and she wonders how will he react. To add to her anxiety, her college fashion show is approaching in which she has to model her own creations in front of a large auditorium filled with people. As her hair slowly begins to fall away, she feels her confidence leaving her as well. Meanwhile Andy has his own feelings of self-doubt. His new relationship causes him to question the direction his life has been taking. Compounding his uneasiness is the looming confrontation with Nick which must inevitably come to pass.
An unconventional love story, Smooth is a romantic comedy with a twist. Humourous, but filled with a great deal of human drama and emotion, it is a story that questions the true meaning of love in a superficial age.
